Thomas Gibian

CEO, Emerging Capital Partners

Thomas Gibian is the chief executive officer of Emerging Capital Partners (ECP) as well as a managing director and founding partner. As CEO, Mr. Gibian is responsible for forming and implementing ECP’s investment strategy and managing key relationships with shareholders and portfolio companies. ECP is the largest fund manager working across the African continent. ECP currently manages six funds totaling over $1.6 billion and has made over 50 investments in companies doing business in more than 40 African countries and across a variety of sectors including telecom, financial services, natural resources and infrastructure.

Prior to forming ECP, Mr. Gibian served as COO for the AIG African Infrastructure Fund, managing the daily operations of the fund and overseeing the structuring and valuation of investments. From 1995 to 2000, he served as an MD in EMP Global’s Asia Funds, where he was the lead transaction partner for investments in India and specialized in the energy, telecommunications and infrastructure sectors.

Prior to his work with EMP Global’s Asia Funds, Mr. Gibian spent three years as executive director and co-head of the structured and project finance group at Goldman Sachs Asia. Mr. Gibian’s career in finance began at Salomon Brothers in 1983 where he was an investment banker focused on the electricity sector. He has served on numerous corporate and non-profit boards and is currently a Trustee of the Center for Global Development.

Mr. Gibian received a bachelor’s degree with honors from the College of Wooster in Ohio and received an MBA in finance from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
